"America the Beautiful," the song says, and the country truly deserves the nickname with its national parks. Spanning vast lands that protect mountain ranges, valleys, canyons, volcanoes, rivers, prairies and more, all 63 national parks are worth visiting.

But for those of us who don’t have time to visit each one, here are the top 13 national parks in the U.S. so you can start thinking about your next outdoor adventure.

13. Acadia National Park

Acadia is an accessible wonderland on the coast of Maine.

Most of the activities here revolve around water — whether it's hiking to peaks to get a view of the Atlantic Ocean, trying your luck at whale watching during migration seasons, or swimming, boating and fishing in the park's many lakes. 

This park remains one of Maine's most famous attractions and is gorgeous at any time of year, though visitors tend to prefer the fall, when the Acadia forest turns red and provides a striking contrast to the ocean.

This incredibly diverse national park is one of the jewels of Washington State. In almost one million acres, the park encompasses a rocky coastline where you can see gray whales migrating, glacier mountains, rain forests and more. 

Olympic National Park is so big that it often feels like five national parks wrapped up in one. The park is conveniently located close to Seattle, so it's pretty easy to access.
