Booking economy used to mean crossing your fingers and hoping for more than pretzels. These days, complimentary meals are almost nostalgic, especially on shorter routes. Still, some airlines continue to include real food in the ticket price. This ranking breaks down which carriers still deliver, and how consistent they are.

If you’re flying long-haul with Lufthansa in economy, you’ll get complimentary meals and drinks. The only catch is that this perk is available only on long-haul flights. On short and medium-haul routes within Europe, Lufthansa runs its paid “Onboard Delights” menu instead.

British Airways

Intercontinental flights on British Airways deliver the full package, with meals, snacks, drinks, and usually wine or beer, even in basic economy. That’s solid, but if you hop on a short-haul flight, things change fast. Short-haul passengers order from the Speedbird Café, which means they pay for their food.

Air France

Air France serves proper hot meals on long-haul economy flights, often with a respectable selection of dishes. On many short and mid-length European routes, you’ll still get a sandwich, pastry, or snack with a drink included. That said, some routes are experimenting with buy-on-board options, which adds a bit of unpredictability.

KLM keeps things fairly consistent. Long-haul flights include complimentary meals and drinks. Even on short-haul flights, every passenger gets a snack and drink, and on longer European routes, that often means a fresh sandwich instead of just a small bite. It may be lighter on short hops, but at least something is always included.

On international Air Canada flights and routes over about 2 hours, economy passengers usually receive a whole tray with salad, warm bread, hot entrée, dessert, plus beverage service. It feels organized and predictable, which travelers tend to appreciate.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic economy passengers receive complimentary meals and drinks, with vegetarian options regularly included in their standard service. The airline doesn’t operate the same type of short European network as some others on this list, so the spotlight stays on intercontinental catering, where it holds up well.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines is generous across much of its network. International economy passengers receive complimentary meals as standard, and even many shorter European routes include hot food. On longer flights, you’re typically choosing between main courses, with sides, bread, dessert, and drinks included.

Qatar Airways

There’s no guessing game about distance or region with Qatar Airways. It keeps its policy refreshingly simple: economy passengers get complimentary meals, regardless of flight length. On long-haul routes, that usually means at least two meal services plus snacks. Drinks are included throughout the flight.

Emirates

Emirates goes big even on economy flights. Multi-course meals are standard, long-haul routes often feature two complete services plus snacks, and drinks, including alcohol, are complimentary. Even on shorter routes, meal service is typically still included, while many competitors have scaled back.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines takes the crown for offering complimentary meals in economy on all flights across its entire network, including short-haul flights. Passengers usually choose between Asian and Western dishes, with snacks and drinks included. On long-haul routes, multiple meal services are standard. The consistency from short hops to ultra-long-haul flights makes it the strongest all-around performer here.
