7 Things Air Travel Had in the ’60s and ’70s That We Miss

Air travel in the 1960s and 1970s—often called the Golden Age of Flying was a full-on event. Sure, today flights are cheaper, faster, and come with the occasional free pretzel, but there’s a lot we left behind… and some of it was glorious. Let’s remember the times when air travel was truly exclusive.

Sleeping Spaces Above the Seats

Forget squishing into an economy seat for an overnight flight. Back then, some planes had bunk-style sleeping berths up above the cabin. You could snooze horizontally like a human instead of pretending your neck pillow works. A simple mattress, pillow, and privacy curtain dramatically made cross-country and international flights more restful.

Fine Dining at 30,000 Feet

Today's in-flight menu often includes a pre-wrapped sandwich or a snack box. Yep, and you have to pay $12 for that soggy sandwich. In contrast, passengers once dined on multi-course meals with prime rib carved tableside and eggs made to order. Meals were served on white linen with silver cutlery and fine china.

Room to Stretch Out

Modern airplanes are designed to maximize passenger numbers, but 50 years ago, comfort was the priority. Seat pitches averaged 36 to 40 inches and gave passengers ample space to stretch without disturbing neighbors. This means you could cross your legs, stretch, or breathe without touching a stranger.

Inflight Lounges and Bars

During the height of luxury air travel, some aircraft offered cocktail lounges and piano bars where passengers could mingle. Flying was an experience to savor, complete with drinks, music, and conversation.

Dress Codes for Passengers

Boarding a flight in flip-flops and sweatpants would have been unthinkable during air travel’s glamorous era. Passengers dressed in suits, dresses, and polished shoes, treating each flight like an occasion.

Personal Service, Even in the Economy

Flight attendants used to dish out hot towels, fruit baskets, and cloth napkins — yes, even in economy. They were trained extensively in hospitality and etiquette. Today, you’re lucky to get a cup of water without feeling inconveniencing someone.

Collectible Luggage Tags

Instead of boring barcodes, travelers received colorful, collectible luggage tags for every trip. These mini keepsakes served as a badge of worldly experience. The tags often featured designs tied to specific airports or airlines.

Ample Socializing

Planes used to be social spaces. Without personal devices, flights turned into flying cocktail parties. Passengers struck up conversations easily, helped along by communal seating areas and lounge spaces.

Smoking on Board

Although it's hard to imagine now, smoking was once not only allowed but glamorized on flights. Airlines even handed out complimentary cigarettes. The health hazards involved eventually led to a ban.

Quick Departures and Arrivals

You didn’t need to wait an hour for your gate to open. Planes pulled up, passengers rolled down portable stairs, and boom — you were on your way. The seamless flow from plane to tarmac made air travel feel refreshingly efficient.

Last-Minute Goodbyes at the Gate

Modern airport security is a military-grade obstacle course, but in the 70’s, loved ones could walk you all the way to your gate. Goodbyes were emotional, movie-worthy scenes right at the plane door.

Barf Bags Readily Available

Motion sickness was a bigger concern in the early days of flight, and airlines equipped every seat with a discreet barf bag. Thanks to better technology and smoother rides, those bags are less common today, though a few still linger just in case.
